Description

The Uitkyk trail terminus and panoramic viewpoint boasts a spectacular view of the secluded Wemmershoek valley and Wemmershoek Dam. Great photo opportunities. The trail crosses a stream just beyond Breakfast Rock; this is a wonderful place to stop – the water is safe to drink and very refreshing.

The distance from the main gate to the vantage point at the terminus of the Uitkyk Trail is about 3km from where you double back to the main gate. The trail is fairly straight and also only rises about 360 metres in total.

Once past Breakfast Rock the trail mostly follows the westerly valley slope of the Perdekloof stream. After a short rest there we start the return along the same route.

From a relatively easy (if a little steep) 2 hour ramble to more strenuous hikes, we have a trail to suit all abilities and fitness levels in the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve. Wonderful views, beautiful Fynbos (the smallest and most diverse Floral Kingdom in the world) and endemic bird life are all waiting to be enjoyed.

Your experienced guide will show you the way, point out animal tracks in the soft sandy areas, give you a brief history of the valley, identify birds and flowers as they are seen and on cold days, a mid-way stop for coffee is always enjoyed. Plenty of photo ops of the valley spread out below you to be had, don’t forget your camera phone.

Hiking in Franschhoek is an experience not be missed. The Franschhoek Valley is nestled between beautiful, dramatic mountains. It’s the first thing you notice as you come into our valley! Beautiful, majestic mountains! It is the one thing all our visitors agree on. Wine tastes may differ but the mountains have a tremendous impact on everyone.
